Magical Mystery Tour Begins

So, today begins the bus ride. Have to get up extra early to catch a bus back into Christchurch to get myself over to one of the pickup points in town. I wasn't the only one leaving the Marine Backpackers, there was also two others venturing the world via motorbike (shipped onto their next destination a week earlier). I got myself into town, and almost thought I'd missed the bus, as it was off down the road. It seems the driver was just off for a spin or durry or something, as I later found a few others who had noticed the same. A short time later the bus returned to Cathedral Square where there was a bunch of hostels nearby and we got on our way to the first town of Kaikoura just a few hours north of Christchurch. Driver seemed like he'd seen enough backpackers and some thought he woke up on the wrong side of the bed, but he had a sense of humour and the ride was informative and comfortable. Christchurch was a starting place for quite a few so there was a gradual meet and greet of some people who I'd be getting to know over the next day or so.

By around lunch we were at Kaikoura, a small pleasant seaside town where there a seals laying around on the rocks at the beaches. The weather was overcast so it didn't look quite as nice as it probably would've normally. Some of the other travelers got straight into the tourist activities like Laura who went swimming with the dolphins. I opted for checking out the country side by foot for a few hours, and returned back to the Dusky Lodge where the very friendly guests that had been calling Kaikoura home for a while were in fine spirits.

Some decided to stay for a few more nights, I decided that this would do it for me, and although the weather started to make the place look decidely brighter with the snow tipped mountains in the background a real sight, I caught the bus again heading up towards the northern tip of the south island.
